There are 5 trash bins:
Paper & cardboard
Glass
Plastic & metal
Organic (food stuff)
Multi-material (everything else)
We have labled trash cans for each of these items under the kitchen sink ~ except for the “multi-material”, for which we use a separate trash bag. Try to have as little multi-material as possible, as Italy wants most trash recycled.
Once the trash cans are full, it’s time to dump the trash in the bins outside. To get to the bins that are closest to the apartment, exit the apartment building onto the street … turn right …walk approx. 2 minutes and you’ll see the bins on the left side of the street.
Put the trash card in the window (on the right) next to the door of the bin you want to use. Then, press the red button that is closest to that door. When ready to open, a green light will blink in the window. You can now open the door and insert the trash bag. DO NOT drop the trash card inside along with the trash … and, DO NOT leave the trash card in the window ~ it is VERY expensive to replace one of these cards.
NOTE: Please feel free to use anything we have in the apartment (i.e. wine, food, soap, shampoo/conditioner, etc.) Please just replace what you use. Also, please keep the blanket on the couch in the living room ~ red wine and a white couch don’t go well together.
We hope that you will find everything you need in the kitchen. Here are the things that will need some instruction:
1. Coffee maker ~ fill the back “canister” with water (there is Brita filtered water in the refrigerator), insert a coffee pod into the top and close the lid, press the right button on the top of the maker - once it stops blinking, press it again to brew the coffee. We generally use 2 pods for a nice cup of coffee. There is a milk frother next to the maker. Add milk to just above the heating ring and press the button on the front of the frother.
2. Oven ~ the knob furthest to the left, turn it to approx. 200 (that’s about 350F); the next knob over turn to the first setting to the right; then, the next knob over is the timer ~ which actually starts the oven heating.
NOTE: There is a cookie sheet and cast iron skillet in the oven … please remove them before using the oven.

3. Dishwasher ~ we rarely use the dishwasher, but have been told it is one of the best! The dishwasher is just to the left of the oven. Open the door, put in a soap tablet (which are in the cabinet above the washing machine), then press the “start” button (just to the left of the button with the “P”) and close the door. It will start once the door is closed.
4. Washing machine/dryer ~ add detergent and softener to the drawer on the left side of the machine (detergent goes into the round trough on the right, softener on the left); to use the washer on it’s most efficient setting, press the power button on the left. Then turn the silver knob in the middle until you see “15’ Quick Wash”, press the button just below to add the drying cycle. Then press the start button just to the right of the silver knob. Your clothes may or may not dry completely, but if needed, the drying rack is behind the door into the 2nd bedroom.
Here is a photo of what the washing machine setting should look like ➡️
IMPORTANT!
Italian kitchens are generally not equipped with garbage disposals ~ ours is one of these kitchen. Please do not let anything go down the kitchen drain (i.e. food!), as the pipes in this building are very old and will clog easily.
The organic recycle bin is under the sink and is designed to be used for food disposal.
There are some tools and cleaning supplies in the cabinet above the washing machine. Please feel free to use whatever you need. If something more serious arises that needs fixing, let us know … or, you can message Neil Stoddart (our handyman) and hopefully he can help.
